Bots IQ, also known as Battlebots, is an after school stealth learning program designed to get kids interested in machining, design, and engineering. The students start out with a list of regulations. For example, the robot has to be less than fifteen pounds, and for anyone who knows materials, electronics, and weaponry, this is a tough challenge. The students must brainstorm an idea, draw up blueprints (Electrical, Structural, Pneumatic, Bolt Patterns, etc.), purchase needed materials, layout and machine parts to tolerances of .001”, assemble everything, troubleshoot, test, compete, and repair. During the process, students must keep a journal of day to day activities and submit a design and engineering portfolio. The students work closely with their sponsors for advice, tricks, and assistance. The reason this program is so successful is because the students don’t realize that they are learning about circuitry, designing, programming, teamwork, quality record keeping, budgets, science, mathematics, and many other lifelong skills that are more difficult to teach in a traditional classroom setting. The businesses recognize that the students who go through this program could potentially be great employees and worth their time to train. This is why businesses sponsor the individual teams. The money is used for buying costly parts and equipment, and offsetting the cost of competition. This program looks great on a resume because of the support and recognition of the businesses and colleges who partake in this worthwhile activity. The Germantown High School program sets themselves apart from many other schools, through our cutting edge designs, our attitude, and our pursuit of precision and excellence. Our determination to design, invent, and innovate items that no other school has ever done, has put us on the map and raised the bar. |
